If You're Not Researching Your Audience, You're Missing Out

I did a post yesterday on LinkedIn about the important of market research.

Here’s the post:

I left out the “how” because I wanted to tackle it here in more depth than a LinkedIn post.

Let’s dive right in.

1st I want to clarify:

Market research is pointless if you don’t have a clear product, or service you sell.

So, if you don’t have 1 of those 2, start there.

Why?

Because you can’t target people when you don’t even know what you’re providing them.

Ok great, now that we know this, let’s assume you have your product, or service.

2nd we need to understand what an ICP is:

This is your Ideal Customer Profile.

It’s a detailed description of your target audience (or person)

Things like:

•Age

•Gender

•Marital status

•Where they live

•What keeps them up at night

This will help you when you market your product/or service effectively to the right people in a way it resonates with them.

Alright, so now you have a clear product/service, you understand what an ICP is, but how do you create one then target them?

Here are 3 tried and true methods to make it easy for you:

  1. Competitor Analysis

You’re going to research 5 people or companies with a similar product or service as you.

The reason this works is because if somebody is already successful in the same area, a lot of the work will be done for you.

What does competitor analysis include?

  • Study their website/landing pages and see what pain points they’re hitting on & who they are targeting

  • Study their content on social media and see what problems they’re solving & what language they use

  • Look at their comment section and see what type of people are engaging the most (young, old, male, female)

  • Look at reviews/testimonials and see what type of customers are actually using their product/service

  • Write down all the questions you see people ask in their comment section, blogs, reviews, etc.

Doing this alone will provide you with more than enough information to understand your target audience (ICP).

But we’ll go deeper.

  1. Search Quora, Reddit, or any other forum

Remember all those questions you wrote down from your competitor’s comment section? Search them on these sites.

Congratulations, you’ve now found more people who are asking the same questions but not only that…more people who searched the same question looking for an answer.

Read through the forums.

Note all the:

  • Problems

  • Pain points

  • Desired outcomes

  • Common demographics

  • Bad experiences they’ve had

  • Things they like about other products/services

*You can also search similar topics, products, people, services similar to yours as well.

Remember: The sauce is in the comments.

  1. Ask your existing audience questions

I know, shocker right?

Why not go straight to the source and ASK.

Every social media has a poll option.

Or you could ask questions in your comment section.

You could ask your email list (if you have one)

Or even DM people in your ideal customer persona (ICP)

Ask them:

• What are they currently struggling with?

• What questions do they want answers to?

• What content do they want to see more of?

Get creative here.

Don’t ever hesitate to ask for information on how you can help people.

It’s important to keep an open dialogue with your audience.

There you have it.

All 3 of these are sure fire ways to understand your audience on a deep level.

The more you understand them, the more you can help them.

The more you help them the more:

•They’ll engage with you and your products/services

•Your content will resonate with them

•Trust you build with them

How does all this tie into building your ideal life?

Part of building your ideal life means building your business to your ideal level.

Which trickles down into building your audience online which then trickles down into understanding your audience.

Everything can be broken down from its larger parts into its smaller parts.
