You Won't Reach Any of Your Goals Without This...
When I was in my early 20’s I had lofty goals.
I wanted to own my own house by 30.
I wanted to have a wife and family.
And lastly, I wanted to be in a career that made me $200k a year minimum.
Now some of these goals aren’t very original or novel in any way, but here’s where it gets interesting.
I’m now 31.
And I have none of them.
I could sit and complain.
Blame the world.
Blame others.
OR
I could figure out why.
So, what I did was reflect going into 2023 on this exact thing… why?
After a week or so I realized there was a glaring flaw.
You know what I didn’t do?
Create a system to execute on these goals.
All I did was wish they would happen.
I made no plan, no system, no strategy.
After chatting with my family and friends, I realized this is a mistake we all make.
We have goals, we set them, we even have a vision.
But all it focuses on is the outcome, not the path to get there.
James clear said:
“A goal is a desired outcome.
A strategy is a desired outcome combined with a plan for achieving it.
Create strategies, not goals.”
To further drive this point home ask yourself:
How many New Years resolutions have you set?
Ok, now how many did you stick with longer than 3 months?
You see, it’s easy to stick with something new for a day, a week, even 1 month.
We ride strictly on motivation (which is fleeting) or rely on pure will power (which is unreliable)
But, we need a guide to follow on your bad days.
Something to fall back on the days you don’t feel like it.
A system to give you so much clarity that it knocks those huge goals into smaller, manageable chunks.
If we truly want to turn our life into our ideal future and build our own Utopia, we have to cover all the bases.
Setting an intention but not changing our behavior isn’t going to do it for us, and even if it does it won’t last longer than 1-2 months tops.
“But Darion, why are you talking about the importance of goal setting if you haven’t even reached your own?”
Oh, but I have.
The goals I referenced to start this letter I set when I was 20 years old without a single clue on how to reach them.
Since then, I’ve created a system called my “Utopian Goal Setting System”
I used it to:
Eliminate self-doubt
Get in the best shape of my life
Structure my days in the best possible way for me
Build my digital writing business to 5 figures in 3 months
Grow my audience on LinkedIn to over 2k in under 6 months
The best part is I’m going to give you the step-by-step breakdown, then a surprise at the end.
Utopian Goal Setting System
Set 1 yearly goal for your:
Business
Personal Life
Health/Fitness
When I say 1 goal…I mean 1 clear goal for each.
You have to be decisive, especially when setting goals.
Take your time with this.
This is not something you want to rush.
If you do, you’ll end up costing yourself precious time you can’t get back if you decide to change 1 or 2months in.
Picture your ideal life in 1 year from now.
Be vivid with this.
This will give you clarity for your 3 goals.
Break them down into 6-month goals
Having a halfway point is crucial for gauging your progress.
If your yearly goal was to lose 20 pounds make your 6 month goal to be down 10.
Keep the same structure with 1 for your:
Business
Personal Life
Health/Fitness
Break it down further into monthly goals
These will be in alignment with hitting your 6-month goal which is in alignment with hitting your 1-year goal.
Write out your:
Business
Personal Life
Health/Fitness
Goals for January all the way to December.
Now you’re truly starting to get clarity on what your year is going to look like if you want to hit those yearly goals.
Monthly goals split into weekly goals
Once again, your monthly goals will be split into weekly goals all designed to make sure you have maximum clarity.
Ask yourself:
What do I need to get done by the end of each week this month to hit my monthly goal?
Lastly your weekly goals will be split into daily goals.
This is where the magic happens.
You will have 3 daily goals.
Again, 1 for your:
Business
Personal Life
Health/Fitness
Plan each day out the night before.
Each daily goal will get you closer to hitting your weekly goals.
Which get you closer to your month goals, etc. (You get it by now)
Now this all sounds intricate and detailed enough right?
Nope, there’s still another half to this.
Reviews
You will also be doing reviews:
•Yearly
•Half way
•Monthly
•Weekly
•Daily
What most people miss when they set their goals (and even make a plan) is to track their progress.
To check in wit themselves.
What this does is over time is it highlight all your problem areas, and also things you need to double down on.
Example:
If you only get 1 of your 3 weekly goals accomplished.
You can go back and look at your daily reviews for that week.
You might notice you didn’t get to bed on time every night that week which resulted in tiredness and poor performance the next day.
Now you know for next week sleep has to be your 1st priority.
This is just one example of how profound this process truly is.
It shines light on everything going on you would otherwise forget in day-to-day life.
Quick Recap:
You’re going to set yearly goals for your:
Business
Personal Life
Health/Fitness
Then you’re going to break those yearly goals into:
•6 month goals
•Monthly goals
•Weekly goals
•Daily goals
All in alignment to get you to your yearly goal with maximum clarity and efficiency.
At the end of every:
•Day
•Week
•Month
•6-months
•Year
You’re going to do a review which goes over questions to reflect on.
This helps you see problem areas and areas you need to double down on.
This system works.
It’s worked for me, I’ve given it to friends & it’s worked for them, and I’ve also given it to my consulting clients and they’ve gotten immediate results.
