The harsh truth about where content marketing is headed

I’ve been thinking a lot about the direction content marketing is headed.
Every day there are hundreds (probably even thousands) of new creators looking to make a name for themselves.
As I watch, there’s one thing that stands out more than anything…
Everyone is focused on building a following over building trust.
And I get it. Nobody wants to have a small account. Everyone wants to look popular.
But I have a prediction:
In a year, everyone will realize vanity metrics don’t build businesses and will start to focus on trust more than ever before.
Why?
Because let’s be real…
We all got into the online business game for freedom, money, and the lifestyle that comes with it.
But here’s the issue…
Once you start writing content online and get caught up in the ‘game’ of content creation, it’s easy to lose sight of this and start focusing on the wrong things.
And by ‘wrong things’ I’m referring to vanity metrics.
The reason it’s an issue:
You never build trust.
And trust my friend, is the #1 people reason people will buy from you.
Think about it.
How often do you buy something from a stranger on the street? Probably never because you don’t know or trust them.
How often do you read reviews before eating somewhere or buying a product? Probably every time so you can trust the fact you won’t be disappointed.
So when it comes to writing your content…
There’s only so many billboard platitudes, top Ted Talks, generic tips and ‘hacks’ you can write before you build an audience that will never buy from you.
I see it all the time…big creators with 100’s of thousands of followers but barely make any money.
So how do you build trust with you content then?
Targeted content.
Content that is written for one niche, with specific pains and desires, with intention to help them toward those desires, and take them away from their pains.
This is how you build trust. This is how you position yourself as the go-to person for them. This is how you need to use content marketing to build your business.
So if you want to be ahead of the curve and start building trust now (before everyone realizes this in a year from now) put your focus there (on targeted content).
Your business will thank you.
