Are You Stuck in Your Ways? (The Harsh Truth of Why It’s So Dangerous)

I had a chat with my mom last week about why she takes the long way to my house when she visits.

She said:

"I only know 1 way and I stick to it."

Which is fair enough.

But if you knew my mom, you'd realize what I was getting at.

She never:

•Tries new foods

•Is open to feedback

•Seeks new perspectives

(I'm not here to put her on blast, I love her to death)

I'm only making a point.

She's the definition of "stuck in their ways"

And as a result, she lives a dull, boring, routine life — Her words not mine.

The more I talk to her about it the more apparent the problem is...

She's not growing.

Because of it there's no open mindedness.

She doesn't challenge her ideas or beliefs.

There's nothing new or fresh in her life...

Which means there's nothing exciting.

And as much as we have talked about it, she's not willing to change.

It got me thinking about how unfulfilling life becomes this way.

There's no sparkle.

No friction.

No curiosity to pursue a new path.

One of my biggest fears is to end up this way.

Which caused me to adopt habits to avoid it.

So here's what I consciously do to avoid becoming stuck in my ways (it's brought a lot of wonder and excitement back into my life)

3 habits to avoid getting stuck in your ways:

  1. Read daily

It opens you up to the author's perception and perspective.

While you read ask yourself:

🔹Do I agree?

🔹What don't I agree with?

🔹Do I have experience with this?

Asking these questions encourages you to explore different angles while being anchored to the authors.

This is powerful alone, but it doesn't stop there...

  1. Explore your curiosities

This open you up to new worlds.

We all have things we've wanted to learn more about, but never have.

Write down your top 3, then find:

🔹Blogs

🔹Forums

🔹YouTube videos

About them.

Lifelong learning is the key to avoid getting stuck.

  1. Ask others their perspectives

This encourages open mindedness.

If you have a firmly held belief, perspective, or opinion...

Ask someone you trust/respect for theirs.

Listen without judgment and without wanting to speak.

Do your best to see from their lens.

It's one of the best ways to expand your world view.

A couple extra things you can add easily:

•Talk to a stranger

•Eat at a new restaurant

•Try a different coffee shop

•Take a different route to work

•Change your morning routine

You don't have to change everything.

But small changes can revitalize your life.

And prevent you from ever getting stuck in your old ways.

That’s it for this week!

I do want to know though:

What’s one of your biggest fears?

Until next week,

Darion.
