A Powerful Writing Strategy (Which Helped Me Hit My First $5K Month Last Year)

The 1hr protocol

The easiest way to become a great content writer?

Get obsessed.

When I started in the online space, I didn't realize how much input and output it actually took to become great.

I figured reading a few pages of a copywriting book here and there was good…

Writing a couple posts on LinkedIn a week was enough...

And reading bigger creators’ content would help me memorize patterns.

But once I actually started networking with some of the best content writers:

(Jon Brosio and Taylin Simmonds to name a few)

I realized how much they were actually writing.

Taylin started to tell me how many rewrites he did per post.

And how he writes on X, Threads, and LinkedIn daily, then writes 2 newsletters a week.

The more I started chatting with successful creators,

The more I noticed there was one commonality between them.

Something that separates everyone who is successful and crushing it online in the writing space from the average…

What was it?

Obsession.

After taking note of this I decided to see how I could not only do this but do it sustainably.

I didn’t want to create a writing habit that I dreaded or could only keep up for a couple of weeks.

Months and months of iterating later, I dialed in my "1 Hr. Writing Protocol"

This really drove the needle for me and took my content writing to a whole new level in a short amount of time.

Now before you hit me with the "I don't have an hour to dedicate to writing every day."

I would challenge you to audit your day. Seriously. From the moment you wake up start tracking what you do and for how long.

For most people, this will be a huge eye-opener into how much time they actually do have.

And even worse...how much they waste.

If you sleep 8 hrs a night (which most people don't) that still gives you 16 waking hrs. Now let's say you work a full time job. There's still 7 hours outside of that after you factor in working and commuting.

With that being said. "I don't have time" is not a viable excuse.

When it comes to content writing in the beginning, there's no need to worry about not having valuable things to write about. Every writer starts somewhere.

My advice is always to write about your:

🔹Experiences

🔹Lessons learned

🔹Challenges you've overcome

You’d be surprised how many people relate to your journey.

Then, (as you start learning more about a skill) Share everything you learn online.

It'll be a solid blend of personal stories and actionable advice.

Now I know sticking to a writing routine is hard. Most people start one and only last a week. But your past attempts didn’t have the 1 Hr. Writing Protocol.

This time, you'll have a structured approach and a clear goal to keep you motivated.

It’s about building a habit, and one that's sustainable.

One of the most rewarding aspects to writing online is seeing your improvements.

These only come from consistent practice and feedback.

On your writing journey always:

🔹Revisit your past work (this will be eye opening)

🔹Track your content metrics (likes, comments, DMs)

🔹Seek constructive feedback (ask your peers what could be better)

Even if it feels slow, every minute spent writing is an investment in your skills and future self.

The idea of writing for a full hour might feel overwhelming.

(Especially for those not used to long writing sessions)

If doing the whole protocol at once feels intimidating at first...

Break it down into manageable sessions.

It's designed in phases so don't be afraid to take a break, and then get back at it.

You’ll find that the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

Soon an hour will whip by, and you might not want to stop.

The whole protocol itself is based on fundamentals. It's not about writing viral content. Memes, or anything of the sort.

If you want to write become a great content writer, you need to be able to engage your reader.

Engagement comes from authenticity and relatability.

It doesn't come from cheap topics that get likes but build no connection.

Focus on sharing your unique perspective and experiences.

Your audience will appreciate your honesty and the effort you put into your craft.

This builds over time which virality is only spur of the moment. Think more long term here.

I did this protocol 5 days a week and it boosted my skills through the roof.

It led to other people noticing my skills and landing me first real writing gigs and a gig with a ghostwriting agency. (My first $5k month)

So without further ado, let’s get to the good stuff:

The 1 Hr Protocol

The protocol is simple, and is meant to be done daily (but start with what you can manage)

A bird’s eye view of it looks like this:

10 min - Hand write copy/content

40 min - Write your own stuff

10 min - Read a book on copywriting

Let’s break it down:

10 minutes hand writing:

This helps you physically see the flow and structure of other great writers.

By emulating them word for word, you get a small glimpse into their mind.

For copy: Find something from swiped.co

You can find ads, sales pages, and everything in between.

For content: Find your favorite creators top performing posts.

Then get to writing it word by word.

40 minutes writing your own stuff:

This gets you in the writing habit as much as possible.

The best part of doing the handwriting first? Now you’re warmed up. It’s like stretching your writing muscles.

Focus on either:

🔹Your content

🔹Your newsletter

🔹Your website/landing pages

Wherever you are in your journey will dictate which you write.

10 minutes reading a writing book:

Now that you’ve written quite a bit (output) now it’s time to input some new knowledge.

My 3 favorite writing books:

  1. Cas$hvertising - Drew Eric Whitman

  2. On Writing Well - William Zinsser

  3. Scientific Advertising - Claude Hopkins

10 minutes is just enough time to learn something new and retain it.

Instead of reading for an hour and retaining little.

Bam there you have it.

It’s a super simple protocol.

Start small (like 3 times a week)

Keep building up as it gets easier and more fun.

This protocol transformed my writing skills in less than 6 months.

There’s no doubt it will do the same for you.

Until next time,

Darion.
