Never again
Just over 3 years ago I started my online business journey.
I was tired of the 9-5 life and building somebody else’s business for them (and also feeling undervalued).
I had heard about freelance copywriting from a friend…
So decided to check it out.
All I wanted in the beginning was the freedom to work from anywhere.
I wasn’t asking for much.
Pretty quickly though… I fell in love with it.
I’ve always loved writing since I was a kid.
So the writing aspect was my favorite.
But there was one huge issue…
I couldn’t figure out how to land a long term client (a retainer).
I was using Upwork at the time and it was all one off gigs paying bottom dollar (but expecting the world).
It hurt.
I knew there had to be a better way.
So instead of focusing just on copy.
I went all in on learning other skills…
Marketing. Sales. Persuasion.
The psychology behind them.
All of it.
My main focus though… was client acquisition.
I learned it came down to 3 main areas:
🔹Mindset & Identity → Believing you’re worthy and capable of running a real business
🔹Niche & Offer Building → Knowing on a deep level who you help and creating them an offer they can’t say no to
🔹Systems (for sales and marketing) → Things like content, outreach, and metrics tracking to eliminate guess work.
After a lot of ups and down…
I finally started to see traction when I focused on these 3.
It hit different when I was finally sending invoices of my own and not through Upwork who took a cut.
All it took…
Learning the other sides of online business that don’t involve writing copy.
The side most copy gurus won’t tell you about. (You know the people I’m talking about)…
The ones with big fancy courses teaching you how to write copy,
But nothing about building a writing business that makes money.
Fast forward to today…
I’ve used all these skills to hit multiple $11K+ months.
That’s why I work with freelance copywriters.
I don’t teach them how to write copy…
I teach them how to land long term retainer clients.
How to build a real online business.
How to build the systems that actually bring you income.
Because I know what it’s like to know how to write copy (and love doing it)…
But not know how to land clients.
Not know how to systemize the daily actions that make you money.
Not know where to start.
So if you’re a freelance copywriter reading this…
Don’t overlook the other skills of running a business like I did early on.
It’ll keep you stuck.
Your friend up north,
Darion.
